Sri Lanka comfortably win by 142 runs

Lahore: Excellent half-centuries by Mahela Jayawardene and Mahela Udawatte and a couple of crucial knocks later by Kaushalya Weeraratne and Nuwan Kulasekara enabled Sri Lanka post a competitive 290-9, that United Arab Emirates (UAE) failed to chase down, hence losing the match by 142 runs in the Asia Cup here on Thursday.

Thanks to UAE’s bowlers in Mohammad Tauqeer and Fahad Alhashmi, whose brilliant spells helped putting breaks on Sri Lanka’s scoring rate. After a fine 114-run second wicket partnership between the two Mahelas, the Lankans lost the course, suddenly reeling at 209-7 but Kaushalya Weeraratne and Nuwan Kulasekara came to the team’s rescue, putting up 53 runs together to take it to an excellent total ultimately.

Choosing to get some batting practice after winning the toss, Lankans lost Kumar Sangakkara for a duck in the very first over. But opener Udawatte, who replaced Sanath Jayasuriya for this game, along with captain Jayawardene ensured no further damage.

Slowly but steadily the duo went on to build a fine innings with Jayawardene being more dominant of the two. Once the skipper opened his arms, he smashed the fielders all around the park, which included four consecutive boundaries in an over to tally 18 runs.
