Adam Gilchrist completed 100 runs off 42 balls which included 9 sixes and 9 fours.

Deccan Chargers made a good start by shaking Mumbai's confidence, they took 3 wickets of Mumbai Indians in six overs. Mumbai Indians made a stable start with opening batsmen L. Ronchi and Jayasurya with Ronchi hitting 2 fours in the first two overs. However, as it is adequately known that sustaining India's firebrand R P Singh isn't easy. Australia's Ronchi was caught on the second ball of the paceman's second over. Rahane, the next man to join in, couldn't take the Chargers' pressure as well. He was out on duck, caught on boundary by Ojha on Sanjay Bangar's delivery.
The next man to come in was Robin Uthappa, who had come to share responsibility with Jayasuriya, but was very shortly dismissed by Afridi as Gilly caught him behind wickets.

Next man to join the crease was Shaun Pollock who appeared to be a good support to Jayasuriya. As the pressure got intense on the Mumbai team, they showed haste in grabbing runs. On the third ball of the eighth over, Pollock tried to run for a second run, but, was stopped by Jayasuriya on the other side. This haste could have been costly for Pollock had it not been for Gilly who slipped the ball off his hands, unable to make it a run-out for Pollock. But, as the South-African former skipper got lucky, luck didn't prevail as much for the Sri Lankan batsman. Shortly after, on the third ball of the tenth over, Afridi showed his bowling prowess again getting Jayasuriya's wicket.

Pollock led the crusade by maintaing momentum for the Mumbai team by hitting occasional boundaries, but was soon bowled by Sanjay Bangar's superb delivery. He made 31 runs off 31 balls. The next batsman to join the crease was the local lad Abhishek Nayar who did contributed 3 stupendous sixes and a single four. However, he was unable to face Nuwan Zyosa’s third ball of the sixteenth over and had to return to pavilion after being caught byGilchrist. Dwane Bravo along with Nayar and Plollock took the score to an expectable 150-plus at Zyosa’s fag end
